How Do Your Camera Scores Stack Up?

Carriers that use their cameras to make their trucks and drivers safer also find that operating more safely can bring greater profitability.

ICSA leaders have many years of experience using in-cab cameras to monitor safety. As a result, ICSA requires all members that wish to be considered for its risk purchase group truck insurance to have forward-facing event recorders installed in all trucks. If a fleet joins ICSA without cameras installed, ICSA offers a cost-effective option to purchase an event recorder from a leading vendor at a reduced cost. All cameras must be from one of four approved companies:

  1. Netradyne
  2. SmartDrive
  3. Motive
  4. Samsara

The first two are the most common in ICSA’s fleet. No matter which camera system your fleet utilizes, you can operate more safely by using the data from the event recorder to make your drivers better. All camera systems track driving behavior and issue a safety score.

Points are assigned for driving behaviors and scores are then normalized with a formula based on miles driven. Keep reading to learn how to compare your operations to other ICSA member fleets.

SmartDrive:

The lower the score, the better you are doing with SmartDrive’s camera system. ICSA’s goal is for members with SmartDrive cameras to have a score no higher than 50, and our top carriers have achieved this! Are you one of them?

The average SmartDrive score for ICSA members with this system is currently 82. The most common reason for this score increasing is vehicles operating over the max speed of 75 mph, which is considered a violation  worth 200 points. The second most common reason for this score to increase is following too closely. For a truck with a following distance of less than one second, a violation increases the SmartDrive score by 275 points.

You can log into your SmartDrive portal to check your score here. Having trouble logging into your SmartDrive Portal to check your score? Netradyne:

Netradyne scores are calculated exactly opposite of SmartDrive scores. Safer carriers receive higher scores. ICSA’s goal is to have members with Netradyne score at least 850 points. Our top Netradyne carriers have achieved this; are you one of them?

The average Netradyne score for members with this system is 845. The most common reason for this score to decrease is the following distance of less than a second, which takes 75 points from your score. The second most common reason for your Netradyne score to decrease is extreme speeds over 75 mph, which reduces your score by 75 points.
